Thank you so much for making this excellent post. There's a whole lot to think about, here, and I'm just sorry it took me so long to get around to reading it.

UseNet is mostly before my time, although I was on mailing lists and I do regularly read Making Light. I'm definitely inclined, however, to bow to your superior expertise on this and admit the oversight. Which is not to say that I don't still think there is some truth in my thoughts on hypertext and fluency, or in the discussions of hierarchy and privilege that you've expanded on here, but I do agree that we have to be very careful of othering old-time, print-oriented fandom -- and I do actually think "othering" is the right word.

This is so very difficult to talk about, when we don't even quite know where the divisions lie. I think there is a lot of good work -- as well as a lot of problematic work -- in the comments to my post, and in posts others -- like you -- are making, trying to get us somewhere. And I do like multicast vs. publishing. Still, though, I said something, at some point in the comments, about how we're actually dealing with a whole lot of axes of reading and response and fannish activity and text and tools and experience and identity, and that trying to work within a dichotomy does not, in fact, come close to describing people. I think that's maybe the closest to truth I've gotten.
